Project.DWG and LOOS.FM turn Recycled Plastic Waste into Building Materials…

A joint project from Project.DWG and LOOS.FM was recently revealed; a temporary structure project in a community park in The Netherlands. The project, titled the PET pavilion — which follows the elevated and structural framework of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House –, aims to focus on rethinking the ways buildings are developed, built and utilized through the usage of sustainable building, recycling, and waste. To be more specific, the PET pavilion is a study to educate and explore new possibilities of the use of a building material made of plastic waste, rather than a be-all-end-all sustainable solution. This is Probably The BEST WAY to Erase a Hard Drive…

Even though the U.S. Department of Defense have their recommendations and standards for formatting old drives, this method from YouTube channel __ makes the DOD’s method look amateurish. This method can be called the “Molten Copper Overwrite™,” which ensures total and COMPLETE destruction of the hard disk drive, making it nothing more than an unusable block of metal, or a nice modern art-inspired paper weight. … Continue reading This is Probably The BEST WAY to Erase a Hard Drive…

The Solar-Powered, Recycled House That Will Let Us Float in Style

Many have considered trading their houses for a life on the water and have gone through with it.  However, many people don’t like the idea of living in a cramped area and having below deck living quarters.  If you’re on the fence about it, you should look at this floating, solar-powered home designed by renowned Italian architect Giancarlo Zema.  Zema’s design, called “Waternest 100,” had been designed for years by EcoFloLife in response to Earth’s climate warming and rising sea levels that would irrevocably change our coastlines. Watch Your Dead Tech Get Demolished at an E-Waste Recycling Plant

When you step inside a facility like this one in upstate New York, you’d see a series of conveyor belts transporting heaps of electronics — ranging from hard drives, laptops, old TVs, printers, medical devices, etc. — to and from shredders and sorters.  It’s called e-waste, which is made of millions of broken, dead, and obsolete gadgets, and sometimes much of the gadgets are either too toxic and/or too valuable to just chunk into a dumpster, sooooooo, they get recycled. At Hugo Neu Recycling, formerly the largest recycler of scrap metal in the country, they now specialize in e-waste, and much of their clientele are businesses who want/need to offload their junk. Plus, it’s also a grim and sobering reminder of just HOW MUCH waste is being produced by our society’s obsession with latest and greatest of electronics. Apple Extending Its Free Recycling Program to ALL Used Products

In an endeavor that is already in progress, all Apple company stores are accepting ANY Apple product for recycling at NO CHARGE, and if the product is resalable, they will offer you some store credit (i.e., Apple Gift Cards) to give customers more incentive to “trade-in”.  Apple CEO Tim Cook declared in a prior shareholder’s meeting that the company should “leave the world better than we found it”, and in an Associated Press interview, Lisa Jackson — Apple VP of Environmental Initiatives (and former EPA administrator) — stated that the company wants to “use all our innovation and all of our expertise to make the planet more secure and make the environment better.” Continue reading “Apple Extending Its Free Recycling Program to ALL Used Products”

This Winery In Mexico Is Made Of Recycled Boats & Eyeglass Lenses

Inspiration for any artist endeavor, or ANY endeavor for that matter, can come from the strangest and unlikeliest of places.  This is not lost on architects Alejandro D’Acosta and Claudia Turren, the Ensenada, Mexico-based team behind the Vena Cava winery in Baja’s Guadalupe Valley, often called the “Napa of Mexico”.  Why you ask; well, this winery is made almost entirely of old, recycled boats. This isn’t too much of a surprise from the same design team that most often find inspiration for they projects from random items in dumpsters, local factories, demolition sites and junkyards (much of it coming from the United States). Return of the London Olympics: The Summer Game’s Shooting Venue

And now…the long awaited “Part 3” of my “coverage” of works of architecture being erected for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Summer Games that start next month in London. First I covered the nomadic basketball arena, second was the natatorium, and now I’ll be covering the London Olympic Shooting Venue.  This building will accommodate the 10, 25 and 50 m Sport Shooting events for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and after the Summer Games have concluded, the three temporary and mobile buildings will be dismantled (a’la the basketball arena before mentioned) and rebuilt in Glasgow for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.   Continue reading “Return of the London Olympics: The Summer Game’s Shooting Venue”
