1. Wear any type of headgear.
2. Play the song “Harlem Shake” by Baauer.
3. GO BUCK WILD!!
The internet is a valuable resource for infromation, education, and interaction, but sometimes something special comes up online that could seem like some type of joke that evolves to become something SO ELABORATE that it seems as if it’s no longer a gag. Case in point: the video above it the credited as the first example of the “Harlem Shake” video meme. What started as an introduction to a comedy compilation video called “Filthy Compilation #6 — Smell My Fingers” from comedian Filthy Frank has EXPLODED — in this PAST WEEK — into an internet and YouTube phenomenon, seemingly joining the likes of the Macarena, The “Gangnam Style” dance, and –ugh — the “Crank Dat” dance (just…..just….terrible).
After the break, I’ve included some videos from college kids, firefighters, office spaces (like SourceFed, CollegeHumor, Break & IGN) and the Peanuts. As far as memes go, most of the “Harlem Shake” videos are pretty awesome, mainly because they’re close-to-nothing more hilarious that watching people — mostly of the anglo persuasion — dance awfully to hip-hop-infused dub-step music. I sent a tweet (on Twitter; of course….) when I first read this story on IGN.com a few months ago. Colin Moriarty, an IGN.com editor, wrote a story about a discussion he had about why he considers Mega Man 3 to be a better game than Mega Man 2, which is widely regarded as the best classic Mega Man game in the series.
