Oh Equifax…Y’all Sooooo Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, DUMB; it’s Maddening…

Ok. Here it goes… The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has completed and released their report regarding the huge 2017 data breach and information leak of Equifax, the world’s largest credit monitoring company, and yes, it’s equally as stupid and enraging as anyone with a functioning brain thought it was. Why? Because of the company’s sheer laziness and arrogance, they failed to  install a … Continue reading Oh Equifax…Y’all Sooooo Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, Dumb, DUMB; it’s Maddening…

Lake Worth, Florida Has Been Accidentally Sending Out Zombie Alert Messages Since Hurricane Irma.

Yup. You read that correctly. However in reality, this is both funny and not funny. When you think of things that shouldn’t be messed around with, one of them is DEFINITELY public alert systems.  Unfortunately, warning systems haven’t had the best year, ranging from the false emergency alert from Hawaii accidentally informing the public of an incoming missile that didn’t exist to the Department of Justice’s Amber Alert … Continue reading Lake Worth, Florida Has Been Accidentally Sending Out Zombie Alert Messages Since Hurricane Irma.

The Nintendo Switch’s Hidden NES Emulator is a Tribute to the late-Satoru Iwata…

A few days ago, dataminers discovered the NES game Golf hidden within the Switch’s firmware. Speculation ranged from it being a bug, a placeholder for the eventual launch of Nintendo’s Virtual Console service, or some hidden Easter egg. In actuality, it’s the last assumption, but it goes a bit deeper than a simple bonus. Members and users of the forum GBATemp.net were able to find out the very specific steps needed to get the emulator up and running legitimately. First, your Nintendo Switch console must be on the initial firmware version (1.0.0) and be set to the date of July 11. Why that specific date? Well, in 2015, that was the day that Satoru Iwata passed away and Golf was one of the first titles he worked on. Secure Your Charging USB Devices by Making Your Own “USB Condom”

Many of us have been there: you need a quick charge of your phone, tablet or gaming system, and all you need is a easy and available connection into any available untrusted computer or public charging station. While the chance of malicious data getting into your phone is fairly slim, the threat still exists. If you’re the do-it-yourself-type, you can head on over to Node, where they’ll show you how to make sure only power can get through the USB port, and not data. WOWZERS!! Here’s Windows 95 Running On A New Nintendo 3DS…BECAUSE REASONS!

I enjoy seeing what console hacking enthusiasts put their minds and hard work into to amuse themselves and curious web-surfers like myself.  Recently, GBATemp user Shutterbug2000 demonstrated his hack showing the Windows 95 computer operating system running on a New Nintendo 3DS via NeoGAF. Shutterbug2000 essentially spent time utilizing a RetroArch DOSbox to get Microsoft’s formerly-most common edition of its operating system software running on Nintendo’s latest hardware. Computer enthusiast Christopher Parish modified a vintage 1970’s-era “DEC RL02” drive — which is roughly as large as your basic PC case — … Continue reading Now That’s a LARGE USB Flash Drive…

Repurpose That Old Laptop into an External Monitor with Stand!

I’ve discussed many, many, MANY times on The PractitioNERD that you never really HAVE to throw away old electronics that appear to be no longer usable for their original tasks.  There’s always a chance you can turn it into artsy weekend project, or incorporate the device with something that currently working, OR maybe the whole device isn’t broken.  For example, what if your old laptop no longer has the speed you need, but the screen works just fine and dandy?
