The Leewardists Ask: What If OTHER Professions Designed Buildings?…

Courtesy of The Leewardists

The comic strips from The Leewardists aren’t unfamiliar to us here at The PractitioNERD, as their humorous take on the architecture culture and profession strikes our funny bones with perfect accuracy.  In the above comic, The Leewardists image an alternate take on how buildings would be designed if left solely to landscape architects, structural consultants, fire fighting consultants, sustainability consultants and government consultants. Of course, this is all in good fun, but it also reminds us that it’s the job of architects to act as the negotiator and take the input from the third parties while also maintaining the project’s overall aspirations. Though I’m sure some architects wish of an alternative universe where they could design without mechanical, structural or regulatory measures, that definitely wouldn’t be for the best, as that could likely trigger a Rapture-like disaster.

Macaulay Culkin Used ‘Home Alone’ Tactics & Traps To Help Santa Win A Wrestling Match

It’s stories like these that remind me how much I love professional wrestling…

One week ago, Los Angeles-based Bar Wrestling held its final show of the year. This promotion’s shows are so well-received and in such high-demand that many shows are standing -room only. They’re kinda of like CHIKARA and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla (PWG), as Bar Wrestling puts on a fun show filled with some of Southern California’s best wrestling talent (here’s some of their DVDs/Blu-rays from Highspots). On their last show for 2017, Joey Ryan dressed up as sexy Santa Claus and teamed up with Candace LeRay (dressed as an elf) and Dick Justice (as a “Supercop Santa”) against “Professional” Peter Avalon, Ray Rosas and (Horn)Swoggle. My match was really funny and…wait…hold on…is…is that…THAT’S MACAULAY CULKIN SITTING IN THE FRONT ROW! Maybe a BIGGER sign to include the ENTIRE SCHOOL NAME (including the words “Elementary School” or “Academy”) would help…

When Architecture and Halloween Come Together, Cool Things Happen…

OCAD University’s Sharp Centre for Design – Will Alsop by Rob Shostak

First off, HAPPY HALLOWEEN from The PractitioNERD! I hope that you have fun, stay safe, and enjoy the costume parties and trick-or-treating! Now, the common route people take when deciding a Halloween costume is selecting one that aligns with their interests.  Some people point toward their professions, so in the case of architects and those in the design-build profession, this often results in elaborate contructions of elaborate costume pieces resembling buildings and other structures. Thanks to a recent poll by the folks over at ArchDaily, their readers from around the world submitted their architecture-themed costumes. So, A Fidget Spinner Mobile Phone Exists. We Have Entered the End Times…

Image result for fidget spinner phone chilli

Well, of course THIS is a THING. It turns out that Hong Kong-based Chilli International’s fidget spinner phone has been around for a while. Last week, the device popped-up over on Reddit, but back in September, PhoneRadar released a hands-on video with the device.  The mobile phone comes in six different colors, includes a tiny 1.4-inch screen, includeds a web browser and Bluetooth connectivity, but only comes with 32MB (yes, MEGABYTES) of on-board storage (that’s expandable to 8GB with an SD card). This very is very simple and basic, similar to the feature phones that existed before smartphone took the reigns. The fidget phone is currently priced at $20, and while it’s only sold in India, you can find other versions of it on Amazon. Continue reading So, A Fidget Spinner Mobile Phone Exists.
