The Solar-Powered, Recycled House That Will Let Us Float in Style

Many have considered trading their houses for a life on the water and have gone through with it.  However, many people don’t like the idea of living in a cramped area and having below deck living quarters.  If you’re on the fence about it, you should look at this floating, solar-powered home designed by renowned Italian architect Giancarlo Zema.  Zema’s design, called “Waternest 100,” had been designed for years by EcoFloLife in response to Earth’s climate warming and rising sea levels that would irrevocably change our coastlines. Al Jazeera’s “Rebel Architecture” showcases “Working on Water”

The last time we discussed Al Jazeera’s new series ‘Rebel Architecture’, the topic was on Spain’s ‘Guerilla Architect’, and this time, as we take a look back at the series, we’re gonna discuss architectural structures that float on water. It’s not quite walking on water, but it’ll do since this story in just incredibly interesting.  In Nigeria, architect Kunlé Adeyemi has been designing floating buildings in order to resolve overcrowding and flooding issues in the country’s waterside slums. Adeyemi states that he is “constantly inspired by solutions we discover in everyday life in the world’s developing cities.” However, despite his studio’s (NLÉ) easy-to-build, low-cost, sustainable floating building prototype and the praise and awards they have accumulated, Adeyemi continues to struggle getting construction approval from the local authorities.

Located over in Long Island Sound, docked off the Bronx, you’ll find the Vernon C. Bain Correctional Center prison barge. Yes, that’s right; a FLOATING PRISON. Interestingly enough, this structure is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest operational prison ship on Earth.
