Syrian Artists Build Replicas of Their Country’s Destroyed Monuments

But a group of Syrian artists at the Za'atari Refugee Camp in Jordan have come together to salvage some memories of their country's lost treasures.

During Syria’s four-year war, a large number of the country’s ancient monuments and artifacts have been destroyed by both ISIS and Syrian bombs targeted at Islamic extremists. For example, in August 2015, ISIS destroyed Palmyra, known as one of the most important cultural centers on the planet.  That, however, won’t stop this group of Syrian refugee artists in Jordan (with some support from the United Nations and Internal Relief and Development) from constructing miniature models of Syria’s ancient architecture to salvage memories and artifacts for the Syria History and Civilization project. Check This Crazy Confederate ‘Copter!

While the old, reliable war tactics of horse-riding and open field combat were utilized in the 1860’s, the advent of the repeating rifle was brand, spanking new to warfare and deemed to be frommmmm thhhheee fuuuutureeeeee… But that wasn’t the only new piece of high-tech in the era, as the Confederacy were deep into plans for creating their own helicopter.  You read that correct: A CIVIL WAR ERA HELICOPTER! Now that would have been something new and innovative; contrasting from the old-fashioned practice of an “unpaid, disrespected workforce.” Wink, wink.   Continue reading “Check This Crazy Confederate ‘Copter!”

Game, Set, Match, Preservation: So Long, Cyclorama Center in Gettysburg, PA…

It appears that after a 14-year preservation battle, the National Park Service has finally confirmed their plans to demolish Richard Neutra‘s mid-century Cyclorama Center, a modernist structure, in Pennsylvania’s Gettysburg National Military Park. The main goal is to restore the site to its original appearance circa 1863 to mark the 150th anniversary commemoration of the well-known battle from the American Civil War. While it may be seen as a black-and-white (wow, that was an interesting pun) victory for Civil War purists and a loss for modernist architecture enthusiasts, it can be said that the true winner is the act of preservation of American History.   Continue reading “Game, Set, Match, Preservation: So Long, Cyclorama Center in Gettysburg, PA…”
