Pastor Ed Young’s “Out Of Character” Interview w/ The Undertaker. No Worries; Nothing Spontaneously Combusts…

Over at Pastor Ed Young’s YouTube channel, he interviews WWE Legend and seven-time world champion, The Undertaker, about his life in the business, the plans Andre the Giant had in store for him, how he became a born-again Christian, and much more. Probably the biggest story of the interview has to do with those plans with Andre the Giant, because due to the Eight Wonder … Continue reading Pastor Ed Young’s “Out Of Character” Interview w/ The Undertaker. 10 Things We Learned on Andre the Giant’s Interview with David Letterman

A couple of weeks ago, the “CM Punk of ESPN” Bill Simmons mentioned on his podcast that there existed footage on YouTube of Late Show host David Letterman interviewing the “Eighth Wonder of the World” & the first inductee in the WWE Hall of Fame, Andre the Giant on his old late night show on NBC. After heading YouTube to find the video (which is not that difficult), I eventually found it and the interview was a joy to watch and was just wonderful. So, here are ten things that I learned/took from that interview, after the break. Continue reading “10 Things We Learned on Andre the Giant’s Interview with David Letterman”

The Brothers Hebner & The Saturday Night’s Main Event Incident

Let’s take a trip down WWF Memory Lane to the year of our Lord, nineteen-hundred-eighty-eight (1987) and reflect. Hulk Hogan defeated Andre the Giant at WrestleMania III in Pontiac, Michigan to retain the WWF Championship in front of nearly 100,000 people, ending Andre’s 15+ year winning streak.  Eight months later (on super-duper fast forward), Andre’s team defeated Hogan’s team at the first annual WWF Survivor Series on Thanksgiving Night, when Andre was the last man standing, a.k.a., the “sole survivor.”  Now, we fast forward (not-quite super-duper, but still), to early 1988 on Saturday Night’s Main Event, where Andre the Giant took on Hulk Hogan for another shot at the WWF Championship.  The result of the match was very different from their WrestleMania match earlier in the prior year, but a couple of other things came up after that match as well. Two things. More than one, less than three. I think you know were I’m going with this… Continue reading “The Brothers Hebner & The Saturday Night’s Main Event Incident”

My Two Favorite “Piper’s Pit” Moments

In 1984, “Rowdy” Roddy Piper was given his own unscripted interview segment called Piper’s Pit, in which he talked to other WWF superstars, however those talks would often result in brawls between Piper and whoever his guest was during the segment. According to Piper, the main purpose and use of the Piper’s Pit segments was to help Piper create and/or maintain feuds with other wrestlers, retain heat with fans, and heal some nagging injuries. From my own memories, Piper’s Pit had some memorable moments that were notable for their comedy, brutality, shock, and changed the course of the careers of the WWF superstars who were guests. “No Holds Barred,” Starring Hulk Hogan: The Movie & The Match

On July 3rd (over a month ago), the 1989 cult classic film No Holds Barred was released for the first time ever on DVD. The film features Hulk Hogan — in his first starring role — as Rip, the larger-than-life pro wrestling champion who’s been defeating some of the biggest bad guys ever to enter the squared circle. When Rip’s success and popularity catches the attention of  a shady TV executive Tom Brell (Kurt Fuller, Wayne’s World), he finds himself stuck in the middle of a plan to boost the network’s ratings — which were sinking — by scheduling him in a match against a vicious monster-of-a-wrestler named Zeus (Tommy “Tiny” Lister, Friday).  I must admit, this film is corny at times and over-the-top, but it’s still a very enjoyable and entertaining experience.  The film also stars Joan Severence (See No Evil, Hear No Evil), along with Mark Pellegrino (TV’s LostSupernatural), and the late-Robert “The Jeep” Swenson.   Continue reading ““No Holds Barred,” Starring Hulk Hogan: The Movie & The Match”
