The 10 Types of Architecture Students (presented by Leewardists.com)

From the 4 years I’ve spent in undergrad at Texas A&M and the extra 2 years in the Master’s program at UT-San Antonio, I can definitely say that we Architecture majors have a lot in common. As part of the lifestyle, we all have the same long-term relationship with coffee (going on 14 years strong), share the urge to cardboard shards and boxes to make models, and our university studio facility became our ‘home away from home’. Along with that, you get to know your fellow students (as you do in ANY other school), but in the world of architecture majors, our studio culture tends to hosts micro-societies of different personalities (after the break).  The Leewardists are rewriting the contemporary history of our civilization through the voice of this elusive being, The Architect.  For more about that comic series follow them on FacebookInstagram or visit their website. Who Wants These Glass Walls That Slide Around Corners to Disappear From View? ME!!!

Window and door manufacturer Vitrocsa seems to have literally turned a corner (heh-heh-heh) with the concept of vanishing glass walls with its “Turnable” system. As demonstrated in the video above, the “Turnable” system turns the concept of your ordinary sliding door on its head by enabling the panels to actually TURN CORNERS. In other words, the glass panels can be hidden within the nearest solid wall. Vitrocsa’s website explains that the system was “developed to optimize space by completely removing panels from view,” as each panel can slide independently of each other and when moved out of the way can be completely hidden either along or pocketed within a side wall. These panels can freely slide around any number of corners allowing a design opportunity in creating opportunities of optimum exterior views. How User Interface Design Was Influenced from ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Minority Report’

I can remember my first reaction upon watching the transparent touch screens of Minority Report and just being in complete and utter awe.  I felt that we could potentially get to that point technologically to achieve this feat in my lifetime (hopefully).  But even before that, I remember watching some episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation (or the cooler acronym, TNG) and seeing the LCARS operating system in action and was fascinated by this futuristic-looking technology.   Continue reading How User Interface Design Was Influenced from ‘Star Trek’ and ‘Minority Report’

The Scaffold Match: Going High Just To Fall Down

Here’ s an image from a scaffold match between the Rock ‘N’ Roll RPMs with Eric Embry taking on The Fantastics and Steve Simpson from World Class Championship Wrestling on May 3rd, 1987.  As you may notice from the picture, there’s a serious lacking of the trademarked squared-circle, i.e. the wrestling ring. In case the guy in the image hanging off the scaffold has you raising your eyebrows, let’s talk about this type of match, and watch a clip from that match as well.   Continue reading The Scaffold Match: Going High Just To Fall Down
