Watch “Sonic Mania Adventures.” Now. Like, RIGHT NOW!!!

As a noted life-long fan of Sonic the Hedgehog, I must say that the new animated web series Sonic Mania Adventures nails the tone of the game Sonic Mania.  While SEGA is keeping the train named Sonic Mania rolling with upcoming enhanced release of Sonic Mania Plus later this summer, they’re also releasing a five-part series of animated shorts, and episode one is currently out on YouTube. Sonic Fan (and sometimes Director) John Carpenter on His Love for the Game Series

John Carpenter has directed and/or produced some of my favorite films (from Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York, The Fog, They Live, Big Trouble in Little China, to name a few), and I put him on my list of my favorite filmmakers of all time. The only thing that could make me idolize this man and his work more was if he were a fan of my favorite video game series…oh…huh…hold on…JOHN CARPENTER IS A SONIC THE HEDGEHOG FAN!?!?!?! ***jumping up-and-down, squealing*** Whew, ok, so, after telling The Guardian last month about how deep he was into Destiny 2, saying “I’ve dedicated my life to learning how to play it. At my age (69 years old) why not? It keeps me out of trouble.” Recently in FACT, he discusses his long-time love for SEGA’s blue-and-spiked-haired dude with an attitude. Sonic Forces Lets You Create Your Own Sonic Character; Excuse Me While I “SQWEEEEEEEEE”…

It’s probably not a secret that I’m a huge fan of Sonic the Hedgehog (here’s the damning proof, itself), so hearing that in one of the upcoming new Sonic games (other than the retro-tastic Sonic Mania, which, YES, I DID pre-order because I’m a sucker), you’d be able to create your own character to fight the forces of evil with Modern Sonic and Classic Sonic. ‘Sonic Mania’ and ‘Project Sonic 2017’ to come out next year?! C’mon 2017; I’mmm Waaaitinnnng…

At the Sonic the Hedgehog Birthday Celebration — which I’m required to write to further perpetuate the notion that The PractitioNERD secretly operates as a Sonic Fan Site — that happened at San Diego ComicCon 2016 this past week (which not only included celebrating the character’s 25th anniversary, sing-a-longs, a God-awful livestream — contrary to the better live experience on-location —  and a merchandising crossover between Sonic the Hedgehog and Sanrio characters, like Hello Kitty), two new Sonic video games were officially announced. The first game that will celebrate the 25-year-old franchise will be Sonic Mania, in which the above trailer starts with an awesome remix of the end theme to the Genesis version of Sonic 3D Blast, and is slated for release in Spring 2017 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC. Sonic The Hedgehog: Triple Trouble – Doc’D #35

My First (& Favorite) Game Expansion: ‘Sonic & Knuckles’

Expansion packs and downloadable content for already-released video games has been a standard practice in the games industry for decades. The best expansions don’t stop at just adding a few extra hours to the game; they enhance and expand the ideas, concepts and systems of the existing game. The best expansions bring further insight into the game’s world, add new story ideas and brand, new mechanics on top of the existing ones. That’s exactly what my favorite game expansion of ALL TIME did, and that game was Sonic & Knuckles on the Sega Genesis. Continue reading “My First (& Favorite) Game Expansion: ‘Sonic & Knuckles’”

‘Ripple Dot Zero’ gets my Sonic into your Strider

I’m up for playing a free Flash game! What about you?? Ripple Dot Zero is a game created by Pixeltruss, and it’s a love letter to the awesome Genesis-gaming years of my youth (yeah, I was a SUPER, DUPER Sega fanboy as a child). Ripple Dot Zero takes some inspiration from two popular Sega Genesis franchises under the belt of the big, blue video game company, Sonic the Hedgehog and Strider.  For example, the game main character is a genetically engineered penguin sporting a sweet pair of sneakers who escapes from his laboratory cage and bounces throughout the air via spring pads (almost like Sega’s mascot). As far a Strider references go, Ripple the Penguin — that doesn’t sound that bad — is armed with dangerous plasma claws with a pretty long reach; you know, like that super awesome sword! Plus, the music is awesome! GO. PLAY. IT. NOW!!!! Continue reading “‘Ripple Dot Zero’ gets my Sonic into your Strider”

Gettysburg Without Java & Sonic Booming In Your House – WIRed #30

Also, thank you Mr. Watterson for “Calvin & Hobbes.” On episode #30 of WIRed this week, I cover the removal of a building on the site of the Battle of Gettysburg  the drama behind the holes in Java security, the SONIC THE HEDGEHOG fan film, and the return of WWF In Your House (in a DVD/Blu-ray set, of course)!   Continue reading “Gettysburg Without Java & Sonic Booming In Your House – WIRed #30”

“Sonic The Hedgehog” Fan Film, Starring Jaleel White!

I realize that if my readers see a Sonic-related post on “The PractitioNERD” they think I’m ready to fanboy-out on the gaming mascot (and they have proof of that here, here, herehere,  here, and here), but if you’ve never heard of Eddie Lebron, let me quickly introduce him to you.  He is the independent filmmaker who is responsible for that awesome full-length Mega Man fan film, and today he has released a brand, new short film depicting a more realistic take on the classic Sega mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog.  But what makes this project even more awesome is that Lebron brought back Sonic’s cartoon voice actor (Steven Q. Urkel himself) Jaleel White for the title role, and combines a computer-generated Sonic with live actors, including a live-action Dr. Robotnik.  Check out the film after the break!   Continue reading ““Sonic The Hedgehog” Fan Film, Starring Jaleel White!”

Train Stations, Bluetooth Lights, Sonic/Mega Man & Classic Hart Drama – WIRed #9

This week’s episode of The PractitioNERD discusses a simple, vernacular Canadian Train Station (The Le Massif de Charlevoix Train Station), Bluetooth-operated light bulbs (Bluetooth Light Bulbs), Sonic the Hedgehog & Mega Man form a tag team against evil (Archie Comic’s Sonic / Mega Man Series to Crossover), and The Hitman vs. British Bulldog at SummerSlam ‘92!
