I love my Retron 5. At its core, the Hyperkin-made system is able to play video game cartridges for the NES, SNES, Genesis, Famicom, Super Famicom, Mega Drive, Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. Essentially, the Retron 5 plays an emulated ROM dumped from the original cartridge on a HD television via HD-friendly visual filters to select from. PLUS, you can save your game, take screenshots and add language translations for imports as patches! SCORE. But it seems Hyperkin isn’t settling with the Retron 5 being a 9-in-one system (or 10 if you have a Master System converter of some type), as this next announcement instantly caught my attention.

This past week, a woke up one morning to a new video from the Metal Jesus Rocks YouTube channel about the newly announced Retron 5 3-in-1 Adapter — to be released on February 28th, 2017 and available from Amazon & Hyperkin for preorder —  which extends compatibility to the Sega Game Gear, Master System, and little known Master System Card. The adapter works when inserted into the existing Genesis cartridge slot.  I also must add that I REALLY love my Sega Game Gear and my games for it, but I have yet to replace the screen, speaker and capacitors in my system, so being able to play my 30-or-so (of the over 300 available) Game Gear games on my HDTV.  Plus, I can further expand my Master System game library (from the 341 released) and start my Master System/Sega Card collection (as there’s only 40-or-so of those). So that’s well over 600 new games unlocked for use on the Retron 5!

Here’s hoping for a Nintendo 64 and Turbo Grafx-16 adapter in the future…

  1. I watch Metal Jesus Rock’s channel. I was strongly leaning toward getting a Retron 5 a few months ago, but instead I bought a PS2. I’m trying to get back into gaming. My interest in video games ended after the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era, so I definitely consider myself a retro gaming fan.
