It goes without saying that Dark Souls is a spirit-crushingly difficult game, and that would be correct because it’s intended to be that way. Rather than allowing players to easily cruise through the game’s single-player mode and enjoy the experience and take in the story and the graphics, but NO, you’re going to get distracted by the game killing you over and over. The goal of Dark Souls is demanding the player to learn each enemy’s attack patterns and how to counter those attacks to defeat them, so button-mashers need not apply. But when it comes to this genius (or crazy) person, why need to press buttons at all?
Most normal people wouldn’t think about playing this game using only the accessories that come with Rock Band (imagine banging on the drums or strumming the guitar to fight off the onslaught of your enemies), but what about your voice? That would definitely make this game more hellish than it already is, but YouTuber gbbearzly doesn’t care about that. Demonstrating that he’s both a glutton for punishment and a seeker of glory, gbbearzly is running through the world of Dark Souls — one of the most difficult games ever created — to completion in almost 30 hours using only his voice and a program called VoiceAttack (with a 1.5 second lag between command and execution, making this MORE impressive). Why, you ask? Well, it seems like he had a good time, as he told Kotaku:
“After finishing Dark Souls with a bunch of Rock Band controllers,” he wrote on reddit, “it was about time to drop the physical controllers and play the game with 0 hands and a microphone. This run was suggested to me many times and I never knew if it would be possible, but after someone showed me a program that did the hard work of voice recognition for me I had to give it a shot.”
Also, Twitch is playing Dark Souls right now, and at only five days in, it’s going about as, errr, good, as you’d expect…
