WWE SummerSlam 1991: Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart vs. ‘Mr. Perfect’ Curt Hennig

Bret Hart (1991)

As WWE SummerSlam 2015 arrives in a couple of weeks (and don’t forget NXT Takeover: Brooklyn earlier that same Sunday), I thought about one of my favorite matches of all time, featuring one of the greatest emerging faces of the era versus the the greatest emerging heels of the early 1990’s. I’m talking about the match between Bret “The Hitman” Hart and “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig from SummerSlam 1991, where each man truly broke away as top stars in the WWE.

That match portrayed Hart as a babyface (dare I say) perfectly, whilst Perfect’s underhanded and dastardly heel tactics assisted in creating a hostile dynamic throughout the entire match.  The bout consisted of low blows, interference and all the shenanigans you could think of in Perfect’s quest to put Hart away, but he kept coming back in incredible fashion.  Hart started at the bottom of the WWE and was gradually rising to the top as a guy people genuinely enjoyed watching and could get behind. Sounds like that guy from a couple of years ago with a penchant for one-word answers and a hand gesture of pointing to the sky; hmmmm……
