If you find this disgusting, you’re missing the point.
In this clip spotted by Laughing Squid, Bill Gates – formerly of Microsoft, now of Saving The Planet – takes a look at the Janicki Omniprocessor (which Gates is helping fund), which sounds like something out of a sci-fi version of SimCity, but as you can see is a machine that already exists and already works.
It’s designed to take human waste and boil it. The water vapours are captured, filtered and dispensed as 100% clean drinking water, while the solid matter is burned, which powers a steam engine that generates electricity.
A recent video shows Bill Gates drinking a glass of water processed from human feces by the Janicki Omniprocessor, a device that turns human waste into drinking water, electricity, and ash that was developed by Janicki Bioenergy and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The goal of the Janicki Omniprocessor is to provide energy, clean drinking water, and hygienic waste disposal to developing nations.
The device works by heating sewage waste and separating solids from water vapor. The water vapor is then processed and filtered extensively until it is drinkable. The dried solids are then used as fuel to power a generator.
Bill Gates recently got to check out the Omniprocessor, an ingenious machine designed and built by Janicki Bioenergy, which turns human waste into water and electricity. In places without good waste treatment plants, it could be a real game-changer.
The idea is that they’ll be useful in places lacking in decent water treatment facilities. Or SimCity expansion packs.
