As the owner of a brand new (used) car, maintenance has become a new part of my schedule to be sure my pretty little 2002 Volkswagen Passat GLS is running at its optimal best. Thing like fluids, parts, accessories and milage are important, but ESPECIALLY the tire, because driving on highways (particularly in Texas, the “wild, wild west” of highway speed limits) with bald tires is a very, very, VERY bad idea. Continental is bolstering its Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS ) to not only monitor your tire pressure but its tread depth, too.
Here’s some common knowledge for those who maintain cars: as your tires age and change shape, which then effects the way they roll and interact with the road surface. What’s clever about Continental’s system is that it keeps track of these differences and compares them over time with model-specific stored data. Once your tires reach (and they WILL) some pre-determined threshold of deterioration, your car will notify you that your tire have reached — or are about to reach — their end of life. Continental expects their system to roll — ha ha, PUNS — into the retail space for the 2017 season, and for cars manufactured in this time frame to come installed and equipped with thier TPMS systems. However you shouldn’t worry, because you can always monitor your tires the old-fashioned — and still effective — way; by using your eyes and actually looking to see if the tread wear indicators on the tires are flush with the tire surface. If they are, YOU BEST GET YOURSELF A NEW SET OF SHOES (or tires…..). Remember it’s ALL about safety first.
