Thanks to the advancements in technology and being able to breathe new life into our iconic celebrities of the past (here’s looking at you, Tupac), visual-effects company Framestore and ad agency AMV BBDO have brought back Audrey Hepburn for a wonderful 60-second commercial for Dove chocolates (known as Galaxy in the UK and Ireland). Seriously, a task such as this was very time-consuming and required a heavy amount of work, plus some excruciating trial-and-error.
The trial-an-error in question refers to the agency’s first crack at creating an authentic-looking Hepburn. The attempt involved the agency casting a woman with eyes similar to Hepburn’s, and then digitally captured 70 face muscle movements and high-resolution textures from the current actress via face-scanning technology. However, compiling the double’s eyes with a CGI Hepburn proved to be a extremely difficult task, and the agency’s had to go back the square one.
In the end, the team continuously and tirelessly built a 3D model of Hepburn based on her entire film, photography, press footage, and documentary catalog. Add in testing the boundaries of a new rendering program to create realistic human skin (that involved light tracing, texture systems, etc.) to create new footage, and four animators re-creating Hepburn’s smile (requiring frame-by-frame hand animation techniques), the group was able to successfully create the CG render of the iconic actress. It’s both eerie AND adorable!
