CHIKARA Pro: A Quick Introduction

One of my favorite wrestling promotions in the country is definitely CHIKARA (or “CHIKARA Pro”), based out of the city of Brotherly Love (a suspect nickname considering the generalization of the Eagles’ fan base), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 2002 by professional wrestlers Mike Quackenbush and “Reckless Youth” Tom Carter (who also serve as wrestling trainers), CHIKARA takes its name and logo from the Japanese kanji meaning of “strength”. The promotion is influenced by the lucha libre style, as its performers are grouped into técnicos (babyfaces, or good guys) and rudos (heels, or villains). Similar in the style of lucha libre, many of CHIKARA’s talent have also performed under masks and with unique gimmicks.

This isn’t going to end well for someone…

CHIKARA grew from the Wrestle Factory wrestling school, founded in Allentown, Pennsylvania by Quackenbush and Carter on January 7, 2002, and the promotion began five months later. In May of the same year, Chikara expanded with the goal of showcasing its students, and their first show later that month (on May 25, 2002) featured Wrestle Factory students, their head trainers, and several other independent wrestlers, including CM Punk, Don Montoya, Chris Hero, Colt Cabana, Blind Rage, Marshal Law, and Love Bug.

The company heavily promotes tag team matches (back to CHIKARA’s focus on the high-flying lucha libre style), with two of their major events, the King of Trios tournament held in spring and Torneo Cibernetico held in the fall, feature tag team matches. CHIKARA’s other major events include Aniversario in May and the Young Lions Cup tournament held in summer. The company crowned its first singles champion in 2011, with the introduction of the Chikara Grand Championship Title Belt.

Me with CHIKARA co-founder Mike Quackenbush at an Anarchy Championship Wrestling show in 2007 in San Antonio, TX.

Be sure to check out the official CHIKARA YouTube channel and their podcast, “CHIKARA Podcast-A-Go-Go,” while you’re at it! I can’t recommend both enough. I LOVE PRO WRESTLING!!
