I realize that if my readers see a Sonic-related post on “The PractitioNERD” they think I’m ready to fanboy-out on the gaming mascot (and they have proof of that here, here, here, here, here, and here), but if you’ve never heard of Eddie Lebron, let me quickly introduce him to you. He is the independent filmmaker who is responsible for that awesome full-length Mega Man fan film, and today he has released a brand, new short film depicting a more realistic take on the classic Sega mascot, Sonic the Hedgehog. But what makes this project even more awesome is that Lebron brought back Sonic’s cartoon voice actor (Steven Q. Urkel himself) Jaleel White for the title role, and combines a computer-generated Sonic with live actors, including a live-action Dr. Robotnik. Check out the film after the break!
Now, don’t get too ahead of yourself, as this is not a full-length feature film. This film is only 18-minute long, and is meant to be “a spec film, with the primary purpose being to show how a Sonic the Hedgehog film, in a live action environment, can be executed.” I must also admit that I really like their take on Sonic’s quills, as well as some other additions like the slight hints of xenophobia toward residents of the South Island of Planet Mobius (like Sonic). Plus, watch the WHOLE thing, as there is a nice surprise appearance at the end. Here you go!
