Georgia Tech Developing Human-like, Realistic Robot Eyes; Earns SkyNet Contract…

There you go, ladies and gentlemen; proof of the inevitable robot apocalypse.

It appears that in an effort is being made to design and create the cyborgs and robots who will eventually launch a nuclear attack to wipe out humankind and have us all enslaved by SkyNet. Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology (a.k.a., Georgia Tech) are playing the role of Cyberdyne Systems, and have developed a system that would control cameras in robots that uses similar functionality as human muscle, making video feeds from said robots more intuitive.  

Ph.D. candidate Joshua Schultz stated:

“The actuators developed in our lab embody many properties in common with biological muscle, especially a cellular structure. Essentially, in the human eye muscles are controlled by neural impulses. Eventually, the actuators we are developing will be used to capture the kinematics and performance of the human eye.”

The team over at Georgia Tech recently presented their hard work at the EEE International Conference on Biomedical Robotics and Biomechatronics in Rome, Italy. They believe that once this is fully developed, the piezoelectric system could be used for surgeries based on MRI’s, rehabilitation efforts, and continued research of the human eye.  Piezoelectric materials expand or contract when electricity is applied to them, allowing them to transform input signals into motion, and the cellular actuator concept works similar to biological muscle structure, as many small actuator units are connected in series or in parallel.

Assistant professor Jun Ueda stated:

“Each muscle-like actuator consists of a piezoelectric material and a nested hierarchical set of strain amplifying mechanisms.”

“Unlike traditional actuators, piezoelectric cellular actuators are governed by the working principles of muscles – namely, motion results by discretely activating, or recruiting, sets of active fibers, called motor units.”

The technology should be very useful for systems that involve a large number of active units operating together, like industrial robots and intelligent assistive robots.

I suppose it’s safe to assume that I’ve outed myself as a huuuuuuge fan of the “Terminator” series…
