Architect Frank Gehry has now left his stamp in the city-state of Hong Kong, after doing so in Los Angeles, New York, Prague, Bilbao.  The recently-completed Opus Hong Kong is a 12-story residential tower, and the architect’s first in Asia.

The apartment complex is located at 53 Stubbs Road on the Peak, which is the highest point in Hong Kong.  It overlooks the entire of the city, and has a ridiculous panoramic view that fills all ten of the 6,000 square-foot units, quoted as virtual “houses in the sky”.  The project’s developers, Swire Properties, stated that the structure cost $27,000 per square foot, and that the individual apartments are expected to fetch record-breaking prices, thus easily qualifying the Opus Hong Kong as the most valuable real estate property in Hong Kong. This declarion is very interesting, as Mr. Gehry, who had persistently expressed his distaste for luxury housing commissions to international media, looked at the project as an opportunity to deliver a design that would be “modest and appropriate for the market.”

Mr. Gehry recently explained to Bloomberg TV (see the link below) that “Hong Kong lends itself to this [Opus] because you are looking at this incredible landscape of the harbour and the city”, a distinctive landscape that enabled Gehry to “create something unique, something that is unlikely to be replicated anywhere again.”
