“I’m standing in the rain, just standing in the rain, without a coat or umbrella, and I’m still bone-dry….”.
Anyway, the London Barbican Arts Center has recently opened this very impressive new installation that allows visitors to walk right into a room simulating a rain storm, and still NOT GET WET. The creators of the oh-so-cleverly titled “Rain Room,” art studio Random International, use a set of 3D cameras to detect the positions of the people within the space, then turns each of its individual rain streams on or off accordingly. The entire exhibit area covers over 1,000 square feet and uses nearly 220 gallons of water per minute, but allows the total supply of water to be quickly filtered and re-circulated through the system.

A few months ago (June, to be exact), a pilot was able to keep the human-powered Gamera II in the air for a 50 seconds. While that sounds very impressive (and it is), it only soaring slightly over the ground. However this flight, while shorter in duration, achieved a record by hovering 8 feet in the air. It has been recently announced that newer USB cables that used the USB 2.0 and 3.0 technology should be able to supply a whole 100 watts of power, which is enough to power a computer. You read correctly: you could be able to charge a laptop via USB! It was decided that new USB cables in production will be able to carry enough to power the brightest light bulb possible. It makes you think about how much we can take the USB technology for granted, as we use USB ports in our myriad of devices to charge a variety of gadgets almost as much as our wall outlets. The Leap is a small iPod sized USB peripheral that creates a 3D interaction space of 8 cubic feet to precisely interact with and control software on your laptop or desktop computer; it’s almost as if it comes straight from a science fiction movie (mainly Minority Report, more-or-less). Essentially, the precision device senses various types of gestures in a 3D space, and can be used for a whole variety of games, programs and applications (more so than Kinect typically working well with nothing else besides the Dance Central and Fruit Ninja games).
