Holy Lynx for Lefties! Resistance: Burning Skies Patch adds Left Handed Controls!

Raise you hands if you remember Atari’s 16-bit handheld video game system, the Lynx. Anyone? Hello? Anyone? Oh, ok, good; seven people! Just kidding, but while the Atari Lynx was unable to compete successfully with Nintendo’s Game Boy or even Sega’s Game Gear, it’s most notable feature (undoubtedly) is its ambidextrous layout, allowing switchable right-handed/left-handed control configuration, which has pretty awesome. I haven’t heard much of a big deal about game controls/controllers for my left-handed gamers (though I’m sure many, many exist in any options menu of any first-person shooter) on the other end of the spectrum, but a new patch for the PS Vita game Resistance: Burning Skies will allow an option to utilized left-handed controls.   Read the rest of this entry

Use a Xbox 360 Controller on a PS3? Use a PS3 Controller on a Xbox 360? The Cronus is MADNESS!!

I’ve owned a Nintendo Gamecube for years, and as much fun as I have playing the games (i.e. Eternal Darkness, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker, etc.), I personally cannot stand the Gamecube controller.  While it’s not the worst controller I’ve ever held (I’m looking at you, Atari Jaguar; quit laughing original Xbox “Duke” controller), the button layout is a mess, in my honest opinion.  Thankfully, I have an adapter to use my PlayStation 2 controller (which is perfect; also, in my honest opinion) with my Gamecube, and it’s wonderful.  It’s a little hard to find such a cross-controller-to-console device for the current generation of video game consoles, but now with this adapter from Cronus, you can use your Xbox 360 controller with the PlayStation 3 (or vice-versa; even with the Wii).

“Call of Duty: Black Ops II” out 11/13/2012, and I’m….Excited?

Wait!  A Call of Duty game that will have branching paths in the main campaign storyline for the first time in the franchise’s history?  AND side-missions to add onto said storyline, taking a sandbox approach?  AND the return of Zombie Mode?  AND it takes place 13 years in the future in a (prayerfully) neo-Cold War 2025?  Oh my goodness; I’m actually LOOKING FORWARD to a new Call of Duty game.  Oh boy, oh boy; three-two-one, one-two-three, what the HECK is bothering me? Sony Announces “God of War: Ascension” for Spring 2013!

Sony has just confirmed that there is going to be a new God of War game, entitled God of War: Ascension, for the PlayStation 3.  Ascension would be a prequel to the entire existing God of War series – Chains of Olympus (PSP), GOW1 (PS2), Betrayal (mobile), Ghost of Sparta (PSP), GOW2 (PS2) and GOW3 (PS3)–  and that more information about the game would be released on the PlayStation Blog on Monday, April 30th. Thank You Pogoplug, My New Personal Home Media Server

My lovely Pogoplug

The Pogoplug Classic

A few weeks ago, I took advantage of a great deal at my local Best Buy and purchased a brand new Pogoplug Classic (that used to retail at $130) for only 30 BUCKS.  For the last few years I’ve been looking for a media server (like the LaCie LaPlug Media Server), and this steal came along.  For the longest time, I’ve been using my laptop or my near-10-year-old desktop PC along with some server software (i.e., TVersity, PS3 Media Server, Vuze, Orb, etc.), that that always involved having my computer on ALL OF THE TIME, hogging up a whole lot of power.

Team Hogan vs. Team Andre the Giant (WWF Survivor Series ’87)

The 25th annual WWE Survivor Series event took place last night at Madison Square Garden in New York City.  While keeping tabs on the match results on numerous wrestling websites, I started thinking about all of the classic matches from Survivor Series’ past.  All of that thought ended with my knowledge of the very first Survivor Series on Thanksgiving Night of 1987.

In 1987, fresh off the heels of Hulk Hogan defeating Andre the Giant to retain the then-WWF Championship at WrestleMania III that March, the rivalry between the two superstars continued.  The result of the increased interest and popularity of the rivalry resulted in the WWE creating a new event in November to capitalize on it. The event would be called “Survivor Series,” and would be centered around a series of elimination-style tag team matches.  The match above is the main event from the 1st annual Survivor Series on November 26th, 1987, as Hulk Hogan and his team competed with Andre the Giant and his team.

Enjoy!

"Yakuza: Dead Souls" is Coming to the US in 2012!! MOAR ZOMBIES!!

The Yakuza video game series by SEGA (known in Japan as Like a Dragon) is one of the more underrated critical darlings in gaming.  It can best be described as the Japanese version of Rockstar Games’ popular Grand Theft Auto series, mixed with the short-lived Shenmue series, also made by SEGA.  SEGA is currently working on releasing a new side-story to the Yakuza series with the release of Yakuza: Dead Souls (or Like a Dragon Of The End in Japan) for the PlayStation 3 in North America and Europe in March 2012 (the game has been available for purchase in Japan since June 9th, 2011).

The game itself is a huge departure from the main series storyline, taking place during the events a zombie outbreak in Kamurocho in April of 2011, when the residents of the city have become zombies. The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (which is Japan’s army) was called in to contain the outbreak, but were unsuccessful in doing so, and only one soldier is still alive, Misuzu Asagi. During these events, the legendary former yakuza, Kazuma Kiryu returns from Okinawa after receiving a phone call from a mysterious man who has kidnapped Haruka Sawamura. Now, four men are the only hope and are the only ones who can defend the city and ultimately save it- the mysterious money-lender Shun Akiyama, feared yakuza and construction company owner “Mad Dog” Goro Majima, the recently awoken from deep sleep Dragon of Kansai, Ryuji Goda, and Kazuma Kiryu.  So it’s almost like Zombieland, but Japanese and taking place mostly in the red district!!

Board Game "RISK" adapts to the Metal Gear Solid series

Snake? Snake! SNNNNNAAAAAAKKKKKE!!!!!!

Ah yes, RISK; the classic turn-based strategy board game in which two to six players attempt to occupy every territory on the board and eliminate all competing forces.  Over the past 10 years or so, RISK has been going under a series of changes; from the major streamlining of the game’s rules back in 2008, to the multiple amount of licensed versions (i.e., Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Narnia, Transformers, and Halo among others), each version with their own unique set of rules.  Announced a few months back at San Diego Comic-Con 2011, it become knowledge that the popular and esteemed “Metal Gear Solid” video game series would be receiving its own version of the turn-based strategy game.

The Metal Gear Solid edition of RISK will feature the five private military corporations (PMCs) that were included in the 2008 PlayStation 3 game, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.  This version also gives the players the opportunity to launch a “nuclear strike,” utilizing the capabilities of the titular walking battle tank, Metal Gear REX (from the 1998 Metal Gear Solid game for the PlayStation), should a player have control of it during the game. Also included is a special dice and an Outer Heaven carrier piece used for stealthy sneak attacks in this versions other two rule options. If you just want to play the game the good-ol’ fashioned way, don’t sweat, my man; you’ll still be able to play the standard game of RISK sans the additional rules of the MGS version.

If the history of RISK adapting itself with a multitude of varied licenses into successful stand-alone games (rather than solely depending on novelty and promotion) says anything, I think we may have another amazing board game on our hands.  RISK: Metal Gear Solid Edition is available for pre-order NOW exclusively through USAopoly.com for $50.  I, for one, am very excited about this!!

I personally own about 20 video game systems and over 500 games in my collection.  Whenever I travel, I typically bring my PSP and my DSlite, but if I’m going somewhere where there’s going to be a television, I’m going to bring along a gaming console, and it’s usually between the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360.  Often, this decision takes about a day or so so I can think about what games I’m currently playing on what system, and the system with the most currently played games ends up winning that decision, but I believe that it is safe to say that this gamer may not have similar first-world issues like mine in the near future.   Read the rest of this entry

G4 Network previews "WWE ’12"

G4 corespondent (and MTV Road Rules alum) Blair Herter was in Los Angeles last month to not only attend the WWE SummerSlam pay-per-view, but also to speak with WWE Superstars Alberto Del Rio, R-Truth, Natalya, and Kelly Kelly to discuss the upcoming “WWE ’12” video game.  The main topic of discussion in the video below is the new game’s simpler and faster gameplay, as well as the new “Predator Technology” animation system.
Yup, formally named “SmackDown vs. RAW,” the series is undergoing some changes, the most visible change being the title, which is now more streamlined to just “WWE ’12″ as opposed to what it could have been called: “WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2012.” The new title is quick and to the point.  While many gamers poke fun at the people who always purchase the newest iteration of the “Madden NFL” series every year, I cannot do so; even though I probably buy a new “Madden NFL” game every 2-3 years, I buy EVERY ITERATION of the WWE SmackDown series game year after year, going back to “WWF SmackDown!” on the original PlayStation back in 2000.  So yeah, I’m a HUUUUGE sucker. :-P

“WWE ’12″ is scheduled to be released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii on November 22, 2011 in North America, and on November 25 in the United Kingdom.  If you pre-order the game, you will be able to play as The Rock and receive alternate attires for The Miz. I CAN’T WAIT!!!!!!!!!!

My Impressions: "Bodycount" (Demo – Xbox 360)

For the last several years, the first-person shooter (FPS) has been a dominant genre in the video games market.  Whereas some developers and publishers seek to cash in on the craze with an inferior product (*cough*Hour of Victory*cough*Haze*cough*America’s Army*cough*, some series such as Call of Duty (CoD), Killzone, Battlefield, Halo, Medal of Honor (MoH), and few others that I refer to as the “usual suspects,” have typically been on top (both critically and financially).  There are also some games that fun to play, but don’t share the type of notoriety of said prior series of games amongst the average gamer, such as TimeSplitters (known for its smooth, buttery controls) and Black (known for its heavily stylized cinema-inspired action and destructibility, mostly with explosive barrels that just happen to be everywhere), among some others.

What we have here is Bodycount, developed by Guildford Studios and published by Codemasters.  The story involves a former American soldier, named Jackson, who is recruited by an mysterious organization referred to as “The Network”, who has regularly resolved conflicts between the States where even the United Nations itself were unable to handle. At a later time, Jackson arrives at the conclusion that the wars were actually caused by some enigmatic group of individuals.

We like BIG BOOM!

Bodycount is an science-fiction/action FPS that features a destructible environment.  This means that nearly everything within the maps (or levels) in the game can be destroyed in a realistic fashion.  Since the player has the option and ability to create a dynamically-changing playing environment, this opens up new paths to completing mission objectives.  By scoring kills against the enemies (who have a fairly difficult, yet manageable A.I.), the player can start multipliers to obtain more points (i.e., The Club and 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand; not FPS’s but third-person shooters, or TPS’s) and unlock power-ups, like air strikes, that would further decimate the map’s environment.

Peek-a-boo, I see you!!!

From the moment I started playing, I noticed that the controls are buttery-smooth (a’la TimeSplitters and the CoD: Modern Warfare series) and the buttons are mapped well for easy finger-maneuvering with the 360 controller.  As I kept playing, I noticed that at times the screen got pretty busy with enemies, HUD graphics/notifications, and just the action in general.  Just be sure to stay focused on the objectives and checkpoints that lie ahead (if you can find and keep track of them during all of the action).  It’s easier to keep track of your objective markers once the action slows down.  Speaking of the oft-cluttered screen, make sure to pay attention to the tip prompts that appear on the screen at certain points during the demo, as they provide some strategies on how to use the variety of weapons and other options at your disposal.  Also, remember this golden rule in Bodycount: cover is you best friend. Don’t go all in with guns blazing (to borrow a quote commonly used — as well as a phrase seen on the back of the box for Black; also, the team that made Bodycount is the same studio that made Black).  There is plenty of cover available, from the dilapidated and makeshift buildings, vehicles, barricades, etc., and there’s always a place to use for cover; plus, the player will have near complete freedom while in cover.  Be warned though, most of the cover areas are useful for only so long because enemies can destroy it should they find you; remember the environmental destructibility I mentioned earlier?

See, I told ya’!

Bottom line, the demo played very well and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with it.  I’m not sure that I’d personally purchase Bodycount upon release (as other gaming related things have caught my eye; I’m looking at you Uncharted 3 and PlayStation Vita), but based on the demo, this game may be a good soon-to-purchase for FPS fans looking for a change from the “usual suspects.”  Check out the demo on Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Network and see for yourself!
