PRO WRESTLING

I have loved, loved, LOVED professional wrestling since I was 4 years old and never told anyone about it until I got to high school.  I see professional wrestling as a type of theater in-the-round (with the ring serving as the stage) that breaks the fourth wall by recognizing, catering to, and making the audience a pseudo-member of the cast. The era of wrestling matches that I enjoy watching are usually from the 1970′s, 1980′s, and early-1990′s; this is were I felt that that most matches depended more on telling stories to the audience through the flow of the match, rather than depend on a series of disjointed short spots like most wrestling matches today do. I’ve always appreciated that type of philosophy when it comes to putting a match together; old-school. I still love going to shows (huge or small scale), and still plan to restart taking classes in the near future to become a wrestler.

  1. I feel the same way about pro wrestling. I’m 26 and have been a fan for as long as I could remember. I was a wrestling fan before it became the “in” thing to do during the Rock/Austin/NWO era of the late 90s- early 00s.

No matter how much wrestling changes (and it’s changed alot), I will likely always be a fan of it. I just find that wrestling offers something uniquely original that no other form of enterianment can match.

I’ve attended alot of small independent shows over the last few years (and took my girlfriend to one a few months ago) and I’ve kind of thought about attending a wrestling school to learn the ropes (no pun intended. lol). I would just like to work a few small indy shows for fun.

  2. Sadly, I didn’t get into wrestling until the mid-90s myself, as though I was an “80s kid” (born 1981), I was raised by a grandmother who, among other things, didn’t like pro-wrestling and thus wouldn’t allow me to watch it. It’s too bad too, because after becoming a fan (primarily because of the Undertaker), and studying up on things I love as I tend to do, I realize that I really missed out. I personally feel the early-to-mid 90s era, of the WWF at least, was arguably the best there was. People laud the “Attitude Era”, and while I was watching then, and enjoyed it, there was far too many promos and dumb skits, and far too little actual matches (sounds familiar).

I find that the early-to-mid 90s had a nice balance, and it had the benefit of having guys like Bret Hart, HBK (even though he was a douche), Diesel (when his knees worked), Razor Ramon, Mr. Perfect, Yokozuna, Owen Hart, the LOD, Undertaker, etc. To me, there was something about the colorfulness and crazy characters they filled it up with during that time that was appealing. Yeah, there was dumb shit like Doink the Clown, but I’d still take Doink over 90% of the boring cast of “characters” WWE parades around today. Don’t get me wrong, I still like a few of their guys, like CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Tyson Kidd, etc. But considering that most of my fav. wrestlers are either retired or passed on (Edge, Bret Hart, Owen Hart, Andre, Roddy Piper, Randy Savage, Mick Foley, etc.), I really just don’t have an interest in their product like I used to.

I’ve seen a bit of Chikara, and really liked what I saw, but don’t follow it enough. Their ridiculous nature appeals to me, more so in some ways than, say, Ring of Honor, which has great wrestling, but not so much in the character department. I guess I prefer a mix of both. Which is probably what drew me to The Undertaker in the first place. Anyways, kudos man, from one fan to another!
